Helpful Hints

• You may find that the Index’s descriptive “house style” is slightly different from the terms that you plan to use for your search queries. We recommend exploring the fifteen Browse lists and Subject Classification network before undertaking specific term searches.
• In all search results, main records for manuscripts and other works with linked component records will stand out, as they typically will have a main record thumbnail image. These records are useful because they contain further notes, bibliography, and links to related records for a work of art. One can also find the main record of a work of art by exploring the expandable field Related Work of Art Records beneath Citations.
• Additional information and search tips related to many search fields, such as Medium, Patron, Creator, Location, Style/Culture, can be found as blog posts on the web site of the Index of Medieval Art.

With any simple search non-subscribers to the Index of Medieval Art database will see text results only, without thumbnail images, whereas subscribers will see results with images. Currently, Advanced Search use of the database is a subscriber only feature. We invite you to read our subscriber information page for more details.
